A unique challenge featuring "WILD TROUT" in a beautiful, unspoiled and nearly unfished river. Come to Eastern Oregon's best fly-fishing river and test your skills. Three days of fishing the Chewaucan River while visiting the rural community of Paisley, Oregon and it's 240 friendly residents!
What: 2007 Chewaucan Challenge, "Catch and Release Flyfish Tournament"
Twelve teams will fish each section and will rotate daily. Two people on each team will fish and one will monitor a competing team.

Sections: Fishing will be in three seperate and unique sections of the beautiful Chewaucan River. One area is around bolders with small pockets and runs. The next will be flat dispersed with large holding water. The third will be small spring creeks.
Teams: Twelve 3 man teams will fish each section and will rotate daily. Two people on each team will fish and one will monitor a competing team.
Orientation: 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM at Paisley's Community Center every morning.

Contest: Fishing can be done anytime between the hours of 6:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Team score cards must be handed in by 7:00 P.M. each day. Every fish is immediately scored by monitor and immediately released.
Lodging: RV camping (FREE) is available along river and at airport. Food: Teams/Individuals can request and reserve an optional country style breakfast served daily during orientation by the ladies of the Paisley Methodist Church. An optional brown bag lunch may be requested from the Homestead Cafe. (see registration page for costs)
Banquet: "Kick Off Banquet" Sunday evening July 22. Choice of Chicken or Prime Rib at Community Center ($20 per person).
Prizes: Winning team will receive a championship bracelet and names will be engraved on a "Perpetual Trophy" that will stay on public display in Paisley for all visitors to see. There will be a cash pool with the amount determined depending upon expenses. There will also be "Place" prizes.
Where: This event will be held in the Rustic Chewaucan River, flowing down from the Gearhart Wilderness Area located in the Fremont National Forest through the center of Paisley, the smallest and also second largest incorporated city in Lake County, Oregon, giving discriminating fishermen over 40 miles of unobstructed fishing. From Bend, Oregon, go south to La Pine on Hwy 97. One mile south of La Pine, turn left (east) on OR 31. Go to mile marker 98 and you are in Paisley.
Rules:
1. Only paid registrants will be allowed to fish in the contest. Contestants must wear ID at all times. Authorized ID will be supplied by the Chewaucan Challenge. Registrants must be over the age of 18 on the days of the tournament.

2. Registrants will fish in pre-designed areas only. Contest areas will be chosen by random lottery.

3. Scoring:

  • Fish 4-8" = one point
  • Fish 8"-10" = two points
  • Fish 10-12" = three points
  • Bonus for fish 12-14" = four points
  • Bonus for fish 14-16" = 5 points
  • Bonus for fish over 16" = six points

  • We are NOT looking for the biggest fish, but the best fishermen. Three days was established because "anyone can get lucky one day."

    4. All eligible fish must be taken from the marshaled and assigned contest areas only during the contest hours of 6 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. July 23, 24 & 25, July 2007

    5. All fish must be presented LIVE to the official weigh master in your designed area for weight determination. Fish will be handled with the best of care, treated with respect and returned to their habitat in the best condition after weighing.

    6. If any catch is determined to meet or match any Oregon or Unites States fishing records for this species, the Paisley Chewaucan Challenge will provide the needed certification to a representative for its entry into published record book in exchange for credit and mention of the circumstances and place of the catch. Such entry, however, shall be the responsibility of the fisher.

    7. By virtue of entry and registration, each participant agrees that his/her photography and name may be used without compensation or fees; said photo and name may be used by the Chewaucan Challenge to publicize the tournament and future events

    8. All fishing activities will be in full compliance with local, state and federal laws and licensing. This event will be monitored by officials representing law enforcement.

    9. Each participant 18 years and older is required to hold a valid fishing license for this event. Each participant agrees to abide by and be personally responsible to and for any violations. In the case of a minor participant, parent or guardians will assume responsibility. Environmental laws include litter, so please leave your area as pristine as you found it.

    10. Dress appropriately for weather conditions. First aid and emergency needs should be reported immediately to the marshal for your area. Local EMT's will be available during the event.
